Rachel Dory is an Austin, Texas based artist known for her evocative, site-specific explorations of roadside America. After visiting, photographing and studying a location, the image slowly emerges as each layer is built up and torn down with a uniquely sculptural painting style. Oil and acrylic paint, encaustic beeswax, ink, pastel, charcoal and fabric may be incorporated into each piece as each layer is brushed, wiped, scraped and scored.
Custom birch panels are constructed for each individual artwork so there are no constraints on size or aspect ratio. The latitude and longitude of each location is noted on the back of each piece, so the physical site can be revisited by artist or viewer.
